THE Conversation
I just finished reading Roz Chast’s
graphic memoir Can’t we talk about
something more pleasant? I have been reading Chast’s cartoons for years, so
I found this account of her parents last years a surprisingly painful and sometimes brutally
honest story. Not that it wasn’t funny
at times, but besides the issues of physical deteriation, there were also Chast’s lifelong emotional
issues with her mother, issues that were never resolved. All and all, it’s a worthwhile book reminding us of the need to deal with the "unpleasant." And finnaly
Chast’s funny little drawings give the book a mood not found in most memoirs.
