Andrew
Sullivan, at his blog, is inviting readers to send in their favorite cover song
ever. One contribution re-introduced me
to Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwoʻole’ (IZ) and his surprising version of “Over
the Rainbow.” IZ died in 1997 from
complications caused by obesity. At the
end of the above video, you see a celebration where his ashes are spilled into
the sea. NPR did an interesting peace
about him here.
The
Judy Garland version of the song is also better than I remembered.
