On December 31st,
I wrote about a forum I attended on preventing gun violence. One of the speakers was Ron Teachman, South
Bend’s police chief. Here is a
paraphrase of part of his talk:
It there was an automobile accident outside this building today, and the perpetrator of that accident deserted his car and ran away, I could trace the owner of that car using public records. If there was a shooting outside this building today, and the perpetrator of the accident dropped his gun and ran away, it is unlikely that I could trace the owner of that gun.
He then went on to say
that that discrepancy needs to end. How
about we all write our lawmakers and tell them so?
